My name is Julien Vidal, I’m 31 and I was born in Grenoble, France. The eldest of 3 brothers, I entered a law & international politics school to finally end with a master in humanitarian management.
After an internship in a major french NGO, I decided to work on the field & support a human-scaled project in a developing country thanks to the International Solidarity Volunteering scheme. After 2 years working in a guerillero reinsertion project in Bogota, I left for 2 years in the Philippines, this time working on the professional insertion of excluded youth.
Now back home in France, I’m trying to find my place in a society I’ve never known as an adult, and I want to enjoy this opportunity to start everything ‘from scratch’ to really question each one of my daily life decisions. That way, I"ll understand and own all of my actions, instead of following a trend which I can’t handle.
As you might have understood, ‘It All Starts With Me’ is based on experimentation: Julien tests, tries, goes forwards & backwards, and once the trial is validated, he posts.
But how can he experiment world-changing solutions when it comes to a feminine environment ? That’s how the ‘It All Starts With Me’ Women’s Week started.
My name is Florence, I joined Julien on the team 6 months ago… but in real life, it has been 4 years already! We met in Colombia, went together to the Philippines, and then came back to France.
What I like most in this project is that it allows us to change our perception on big & small day-to-day things. Most of the time, we don’t own our daily life. Our habits, our landmarks, our rhythms : they warp our life in such a way that things get out of hand.
So that’s it, for 7 days, I accepted to write articles on more feminine concerns: every article is a new opportunity for me to take a step back and challenge my habits & the way I act and consume in order to win my life back. What a breath of fresh air!
Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always wanted to help others do what they were doing. Three decades later, life has taught me that that was exactly what brings the greatest joy – so I’m keeping it up!
My name is Gaspard Lorthiois, I’m 38 years old, and, like Julien, I also spent time in the Philippines as a volunteer, doing my best so that others could do their best, too. I was trained as an engineer, I had worked in woodworking, solar panels and even aircraft manufacturing, so I thought I was bound to share at least something… and I’m the one who came out transformed! I discovered that doing to get things done is hollow, but that all the good stuff is in doing “together”!
Happily wed over there with the most beautiful person in the country – the most generous, too! – we moved to France about a year ago, in Nantes. I like weaving words and clowning around with kids, so my wife and I teach English to indigenous native children. I now earn a living as a translator so that I can take breaks whenever I feel like it to be with those I love. Each break gives me a chance to try to implement one of Julien’s actions… at the very least I succeed in getting it translated!
I’m Gaspard Delaoustre, a French 19-year old born in Lille, France. I’m currently a student at King’s College London.
I discovered It All Starts With Me a few months ago, but recently I decided to give it a real try by translating a few articles from Julien’s blog.
Environment-friendly consuming is a topic that matters a lot to me, especially in England. Here, everything is covered in plastic, from bread to a bunch of grapes. I think we can all own our way of consuming to change the world and protect our planet.
So join the adventure, because it all starts with you!
Loriane & Fanny
We’ve both been designers for 7 years. 4 years ago, after a ‘designer thunderbolt’, we decided to kickstart our collective (YAY designs - micro edition) to work on projects that we selected ourselves, with our own sensitivity.
In everyday life, apart from "classic" design projects, we like to create ‘useful’ stationery to push people to change their ways of consuming — all of this through imagery. For example, we created a fruits & veggies seasonal calendar, printed locally with recycled paper and solvent-free ink! ;)
We joined the IASWM (It All Starts With Me) adventure a few months ago to turn Julien’s challenges into images, and make change accessible to the many. Graphic design for clients is good, but using it to help a noble cause out is even better… and it’s only the beginning with Julien! Stay tuned, it’ll have some punch to it!
